Coloring is becoming accepted within a University setting as a tool for students to maintain focus. Theresa Cinderella, a student studying art therapy at Lesley University in Cambridge, Mass. said that “A lot of my fellow graduate classmates bring these coloring books into the classroom setting as a tool to focus more on lectures.” She explained that more professors are beginning to welcome this behavior. “For my internship, I find the clients who are fidgeting and cannot sit still ask for coloring in books in order to concentrate on group discussions.”
When children have the opportunity to color, they engage their independence and self-expression. What colors should they choose? What should they draw? What will it look like? Will it be big or small? Will it have lots of colors or just one color? Will the faces be smiling or frowning? Chances are, the answers to their questions are either consciously or subconsciously expressing themselves or their emotions. Drawing is a chance for your child to work through his or her emotions and to express themselves in a safe environment. Children may not always have the words to say exactly how their feeling, but coloring will let your child express himself without needing the vocabulary to do so.
Coloring is also a great focus-building exercise. Focus is an important skill for children to learn, not only for their academic careers but for their professional careers as well. Focus is what helps us see through any task from start to finish. You’ll notice as your child’s focus develops that his or her drawings become more intricate, taking more time to complete.
Creativity: coloring in stimulates creative thinking. Children can develop a drawing style and enjoy making an imaginary world. Children learn to plan as they decide the colors they will use in their picture and then what order they are going to color things within the picture. As their confidence grows, they are more likely to take risks and experiment with color, patterns, and special effects with pencil or marker strokes.
Coordination and the ability to focus is just developing in young children, and undertaking activities to foster and strengthen this budding talent assists in efficient, healthy development. The act of holding crayons, choosing colors, implementing the color in the ideal spot and even sharpening crayons can all help with cultivating strong hand-eye coordination in youngsters.
The act of coloring can improve motor skills in your children. The motions involved in coloring like holding the tools and scribbling with crayon can help in the development of the tiny muscles in his wrist, fingers and hands. Fine motor skills help your children to write and manipulate small objects. This helps your children to perform better academically. Coloring helps to develop and strengthen the hand muscles, which later helps with activities like typing and lifting objects.
