So your child came home from school with yet another picture she drew of you and her holding hands. While the scribbles are cute, have you ever found yourself wondering if they’re really an important part of school? Are they actually supporting the academic atmosphere? The answer is YES, coloring is important in early childhood education for a lot of reasons!
Hand & Eye Coordination: coloring in assists in the development of hand & eye coordination as the child learns to color within the specified area. Watching and doing and coordinating both actions is a developing skill when coloring in. When children first start coloring they will have a tough time keeping within the lines but as they progress their skill will increase. Staying inside the lines takes considerable skill and when they master it they gain a sense of pride and achievement.
A crayon is likely one of the first writing instruments your child will hold. By practicing with crayons, your child is fine-tuning their proper pencil grip. Pencil grip is part hand strength and part practice. Coloring allows for both! Most improper hand grips are caused when a child develops poor grip habits before their hands are strong enough to support the proper grip.
When testing to measure improvements in psychological outcomes, a study concluded that ”Coloring participants showed significantly lower levels of depressive symptoms and anxiety after the intervention… We conclude that daily coloring can improve some negative psychological outcomes and that it may provide an effective, inexpensive, and highly accessible self-help tool.”
Coloring books and sheets are important educational tools to prepare the preschoolers for school. It is also one of the most favorite pastime activities of the kids. It sparks their imagination and gives them an opportunity to express themselves. Give your kids drawing sheets of their favorite cartoons, animals or film stars; they will spend hours coloring it.
Coloring is becoming accepted within a University setting as a tool for students to maintain focus. Theresa Cinderella, a student studying art therapy at Lesley University in Cambridge, Mass. said that “A lot of my fellow graduate classmates bring these coloring books into the classroom setting as a tool to focus more on lectures.” She explained that more professors are beginning to welcome this behavior. “For my internship, I find the clients who are fidgeting and cannot sit still ask for coloring in books in order to concentrate on group discussions.”
